[ Abstract ]

This study aims to understand the current situation of senior high and vocational high schools students'' knowledge of and needs for the prevention of sports injuries, and explores how individual differences affect the same. The study was conducted through the use of a cross-sectional questionnaire distributed to four senior high and vocational high schools located in Taoyuan. A stratified cluster sampling method was used, selecting three classes of students from each grade from each school as survey samples. The data were collected by a self-constructed Questionnaire for Knowledge of and Needs for the Prevention of Sports Injuries done in the period from mid-February 2005 to mid-March 2005. A total of 1,720 copies of the questionnaire were issued, and 1,694 valid copies were collected, giving a valid return rate of 98.3%. The data were analyzed using such methods as independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The following are the major findings of this study.

1. For the section of the Knowledge of the Prevention of Sports Injuries, more than 50% of the students answered wrongly regarding the standard handling of sprains, the time required when applying a hot or cold compress, differentiation between types of sports injuries, the handling of bleeding wounds, the skill of CPR, the symptoms of heat stroke, and the principle of using bandages to bind a wound.
2. For the section of the Knowledge of the Prevention of Sports Injuries, students in public schools showed better knowledge than students in private schools; students in senior high schools showed better knowledge than students in vocational high schools; female students showed better knowledge than male students; students who had obtained knowledge of the prevention of sports injuries mainly from military training and nursing courses showed better knowledge than students who obtained the same from other sources; third-grade students showed better knowledge than first-grade and second-grade students; and senior high school students who belong to Group One based on their majors showed better knowledge than students of other groups.

3. The students at large think they have high needs for the knowledge of the prevention of sports injuries; among them, female students have higher needs than male students, and students who had obtained knowledge of the prevention of sports injuries mainly from military training and nursing courses have higher needs than other students.

4. A positive Pearson product-moment correlation is observed. This shows that students who are more knowledgeable about the prevention of sports injuries also have higher needs for the knowledge thereof.
