This paper aims to know the experience and process of emergency nursing professionals in acquiring practical knowledge and the content of the practical knowledge they acquired by using phenomenological research and in-depth interview, as well as adopting the steps suggested by Moustakas (1994) in data analysis. The author conducted in-depth interviews with ten nursing professionals with more than three years of practical experience and collected thirteen samples. Data analysis reveals that there are four themes and ten sub- themes, which are further divided into twenty-two sub- themes items, as well as four major areas of content of practical knowledge involved in the learning process for emergency nursing professionals. The four subjects involved in the learning process are as follows: (1) Natural Apprenticeship which includes the sub- themes of learning to view work as top priority and focus on the illness, as well as displaying reactions of uncertainty, (2) Stimulation-Response Learning Model, with the sub- themes being passive literature search, learning from other people’s behavior patterns, and accumulating experience from practices, (3) Work Requirement-Oriented Learning, with the sub- themes being development of professional expertise through courses and self-monitoring learning, and (4) Self-Reflection Learning, including the sub- themes of learning by comparison and self-reflection. The content of practical knowledge acquired by emergency nursing professionals in the learning process covers basic emergency treatment procedure and routines (including getting to know the environment, ward routines, operating procedure, basic emergency skills, and managment of symptoms), mechanism of diseases and medicine (including pathological mechanism, mechanism of medicine, and the patient’s reactions), the latest emergency treatment know-how (including new-type diseases, updated emergency treatment regulations, and discussions on medical treatment), and nursing concepts (including attitude toward nursing and continuity in nursing care). |
